One of the very first things that drew me to working in weddings, was the creativity. Of course a wedding is romantic and full of emotion and the wedding I have to share with you today was overflowing with love, romance and emotion. But this wedding was also the creative product of two people who not only adore each other, but it would seem, are passionate about designing, creating and getting their hands dirty. If ever I met a Bride & Groom who could do my job and more, Layne & PJ were those two people. So, ‘no pressure’, as I headed away for a weekend at the end of July to be part of their Wedding at Midginbil Hill as the On the Day Coordinator.
Midginbil Hill as described on their website is a working cattle farm on 400 acres situated beneath the spectacular escarpment of the World Heritage listed Nightcap National Park, and close to Byron Bay and the Gold Coast. Apart from the magical setting, what made Midginbil Hill perfect for Layne & PJ was the country style barn (so them) and the fact that their family and friends, who they were so obviously close to, could all stay on the property with them; turning their wedding day into a weekend of fun, laughter and a few tears.
Layne & PJ’s Vison
Layne: “I knew exactly what kind of wedding I wanted; a ‘DIY’ that showcased the type of people we are. A relaxed feel, with unique elements that we have created.”
I was a little bit enchanted by this couple before the wedding day, because they are just so darn cute and in love and that is infectious to be around. I was also very excited to be able to style a wedding in such a gorgeous location with ‘good bones’ and so much natural beauty. Oh and as a bonus, sharing duties with me on this day, was my husband Marcel, a man who knows how to throw a party better than anyone I know!
When Layne & PJ arrived with a retro trailer, packed to the brim with their decor for the wedding, PJ at the wheel & Layne in her cowboy boots, head out of the sunroof with a massive smile on her face and and assortment of family members including Mother of the Groom, Bommie, who was in charge of decorating the cake with an army of helpers, I was gone and knew at that moment, I was going to find it hard to pull myself away from this wedding at the end of the weekend. This is a family you just want to be part of. And so it was for the next two days as we worked hard to bring their vision to life and make sure the day went off without a hitch. I like to think that we sprinkled some I Do Crew magic around as we created their Eucalyptus table runners, styled the tables with an abundance of candles and jars of potpourri and decorated the barn with all their little touches; including a sweetheart table, lolly buffet & DIY Bar. Their ceremony site, with a little creek running behind it and simple styling, is one of the most magical spots I have ever been in for a wedding and it was a highlight for me to be able to Style it.
But the vision, creativity and love of this wedding, was all theirs and it was our job to let them enjoy seeing it all come together at their Wedding. And I think we might have been able to do just that because of her wedding, Layne had this to say;
“I am so relieved we had found Christine and the I Do Crew to co-ordinate and style our wedding. I think that being in control and able to come up with the ideas and source all our own materials to have exactly what we wanted then handing it over to someone who can execute it is an amazing idea and the best decision we made. But the best part about having a DIY wedding then letting the I Do Crew Co-ordinate on the day was being surprised! The surprise of what you thought it would be like in your head, actually come to life. It definitely added a certain excitement and emotion to our wedding. So honestly If your thinking about a DIY, do yourselves a favour! Trust me it doesn’t take it away from anything you have planned or want to do yourself, it gives you time to enjoy your day and excitement that you have actually pulled off the wedding of your dreams!!”
We wish Layne and PJ the adventure of a lifetime and a life overflowing with moments as beautiful as the ones they created on their Wedding Day!
