Your Wedding Day is full of moments where all eyes are upon you, but perhaps the one that causes couples the most concern is that moment your MC announces you will be taking the dance floor for your wedding dance. And hey, I get it, we have all witnessed enough awkward moments on the dance floor (perhaps even participated in some), to know that this moment has the potential to cause some discomfort for you and your guests. But the good news is, it doesn’t have to be that way.
If ‘tripping the light fantastic’ doesn’t come naturally to you, or you just want to be able to step out onto the dance floor with confidence, so you can truly enjoy the moment you are sharing with each other, you could try dance lessons.
Yes, I said, Wedding Dance Lessons
Today I am excited to share with you an interview with Jessica Prince who, along with being an incredibly successful and talented dancer, teaches couples like you, to dance. And don’t be concerned if you are not located nearby Jessica in Sydney, read on for an exciting announcement about online wedding dance classes!
Introducing Jessica Prince
“Jessica started dancing at the age of 3 enrolling in baby ballerinas. She picked up her first pair of ballroom heels at 17 and has not looked back since. She moved to Sydney to pursue her dancing dream and is currently one of the top competitors in Australia in both Ballroom and New Vogue.
Jessica has featured on Channel 7’s Dancing with the Stars for the last three seasons, most infamously with Mark Holden in 2014 but also with supermodel Jordan Stenmark and ironman, Caine Eckstein. She also featured in the 2010 series of So You Think You Can Dance Australia where she was one of the final three girls of the competition. And, In 2014 she was selected as one of the ballroom dancers in Strictly Ballroom the Musical getting to work with Baz Luhrrman on adapting his screen sensation for the stage.”
Jessica, I expect I know the answer to this, as you have been dancing since such a young age, but what did you want to be when you grew up and why?
From a very young age, I have always wanted to dance, no question about it. I did my first class when I was three and for me, I felt I didn’t belong anywhere but on a stage. Unfortunately, it is a very fickle industry and my parents weren’t so keen on me not having a back up plan so I did go to university and currently have three degrees (BA Mathematics, BA Communications and Masters in Bio-statistics) which I completed while I was still working in the dancing industry. Thankfully I have been very blessed in achieving my goal of earning a living from my dancing and have never needed to use my degrees.
You have had an amazing career, including working on Dancing with the Stars. Is there something that stands out as a magical moment you will never forget?
I have had a very blessed career and am so thankful for all the opportunities that have come my way. As for one magical moment, it is very hard to pick one – I did enjoy being a part of Strictly Ballroom the Musical and working with Baz Luhrmann himself. I loved seeing how his genius mind worked. You could tell he could see something in his head and it wasn’t until two weeks later that we all finally understood what he saw – it was just inspiring to see him in action.
Tell us about your school and the work you do with couples preparing for their Wedding Day & their Wedding Dance
I run my own dance studio in five locations across Sydney. My speciality is wedding dance lessons however, my studio also does Zumba classes, group Ballroom and Latin American lessons, ballet classes and also competitive Ballroom and New Vogue private lessons.
I love working with couples for their wedding because it is such a special time and it’s so rewarding to see the journey they take from usually not being able to do a basic two step, to whipping out an amazing routine on their day. All of my bridal lessons are tailored made on dancing ability and what the couple envisions for their special day; don’t assume that just because you think you can’t dance, you can’t have an extraordinary routine and similarly, if you don’t want anything too over the top, I can work with you on very simple choreography so the routine does suit the two of you as a couple.
All my routines are personalised to the couples and their song and there are no two routines the same. My goal is to make every couple feel confident and calm on the dance floor so that they can actually enjoy their first dance.
Generally speaking, what do you find that most couple’s fear the most about performing their first dance on their wedding day?
I find that most couples dread their first lesson and it is the fear of actually stepping inside a dance studio that can be off-putting for most couples. It is such a shame that this is the case because a dance studio is not something to be feared.
I believe that everyone can dance and everyone SHOULD dance. If you can walk you can dance, so getting the first lesson nerves out of the way is the best thing you can do. As I say to my couples, if you’re nervous stepping inside a private dance studio how are you going to feel dancing in front of all your guests when all eyes are on you. Lessons are the best way to combat these nerves and I also give tips and tricks for overcoming stage fright – I’ve danced on live television in front of over a million people so I know a few things about overcoming the butterflies on the day.
I have three main packages for couples to choose from:
- Let’s Elope – three lessons for $250. This is most suited for couples who don’t necessarily want an elaborately choreographed routine but essentially learn a few basic steps that will create your simple and romantic routine.
- Happily Ever After – six lessons for $500. This is my most popular package. This package gives you customised choreography for your chosen song and it can be as elaborate or as simple as you would like. You will learn about musicality and more complex dance steps than the previous package. Six lessons allow couples to feel extremely comfortable and natural on the dance floor.
- Fairy Tale Ending – ten lessons for $850. This gives you that little bit extra. This package allows you to take your routine from spectacular to show stopper! This gives you a personalised routine to your chosen wedding song with an emphasis on musicality and choreography. It gives you time to refine dance technique and feel extremely confident on your wedding day.
What I love about my packages however, is although these are my main packages I am happy to tailor make a package to suit any couple. For instance if a couple starts with the Let’s Elope but feels that they would like more lessons, I can upgrade them to either the Happily Ever After or the Fairy Tale. Meet the couples Jessica has worked with.
I imagine the process of learning choreography together is something very special for a couple to do ahead of their wedding day and may even be a really nice way to focus on each other rather than all of the wedding planning swirling around them. Is this something you have witnessed with couples you have worked with?
I have definitely witnessed this and this is perhaps one of my favourite reason I believe couples should have dance lessons. Dancing is such a personal and intimate experience and I love watching couples connecting together and learning new dynamics in their relationship. Wedding planning is stressful and it can take a toll on your relationship if you’re not careful. In the studio you have to rely on each other in ways you may not have experienced before. Guys need to learn to guide their future wife through the choreography, support her and look after her. Ladies need to learn to trust that their future husband will be there to catch them in lifts and dips and be open to allow him to lead them through the moves. At the end of my packages I have so many couples say they have learnt so much more about their spouse than they thought was possible and to me, that is what dancing is about.
What do you love most about helping people to feel confident about their first dance on their wedding day?
I love spreading the love of dance. To me, it is the most personal thing you can publicly share with someone else. Dancing is showing a little bit of your soul to the world and when better to share this with the world then on your wedding day.\
I’ve worked with a lot of couples and I still get that nervous excitement when it’s the couples last lesson before the big day and they smash out the routine like professionals when just six weeks before they had no idea what was their left foot or right foot. The feeling of accomplishment that my couples have when they feel confident and calm and excited on the dance floor, that is why I do what I do.
I have even had several couples continue their lessons after their big day because they loved sharing that time together every week. With all the stress of work and life, having an hour to themselves every week learning more and more about each other through music and movement, they love it and that’s when I know they’ve fallen in love with dancing and that’s all I can ask for!
